The Importance of an SSL Certificate

Not having an SSL certificate on your site can negatively affect your brand. These days it’s easier than ever to secure your website.

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that is used to send information from your visitors to your web server over a secure connection. It is used to verify the identity of a site so that people know the URL and the site matches and they are not browsing a fake site.

The internet is evolving rapidly and something as simple as a secure website for a business site is becoming more of a necessity than a luxury. Even if you’re just running a blog, an SSL certificate can help increase your credibility with your audience.

In fact, not having an SSL certificate on your website can actually hurt your brand. A 2017 survey by HubSpot shows that over 70% of people are likely to not browse a website if their browsers indicated that it was not secure.

What Can You Do?

If you’re running your website on popular web hosting platforms (WordPress.com, Shopify, etc) then more than likely there will be options to secure your site. Depending on your hosting provider they will either add it to your website for free or they can be purchased at an annual cost.

Remember that an SSL certificate may not be necessary for blogs or company pages, but it will definitely help your brand credibility and build trust with your customers!
